The national team Lone Star made an unprecedented progress in the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations Group A qualifiers by picking up the second straight win since the 2001 Afcon.
Liberia’s valuable 1-0 win over the Shore men of the Red Sea of Djibouti yesterday moved them second on the Group table with six points-scoring three goals and two goals against – out of three games.
Anthony Laffor of Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa was the marksman who caused the red-white-and-blue to cruise past Djibouti.
According reports, Laffor was the last to arrive early yesterday morning, about eight hours to the game. The derby was played at the El Hadj Hassan Gouled Stadium in Djibouti City.
The Lone Star played without danger man William Jebor of Spanish SD Ponferradina who didn’t show up even though he was called. Reports said his absence was technical, but others said it was because of club engagement.
Reports said the Djibouti national football team is expected in the country this weekend to honor their return-leg against the Lone Star at the Antoinette Tubman Stadium.
Djibouti still remains the underdog of Group A – with zero point out of three games. Tunisia has three points, while Togo heads the Group with six points, out of two games.
Meanwhile, Tunisia hosts Togo today, owing to the Confederation of African Football’s refusal to move the qualifier out of Tunisia because of security concerns.
Togo Football Federation (TFF) appealed that the game in the northeastern city of Monastir should be played in a neutral country.
Tunisian security forces have been battling militants on the southern border with Libya, with around 20 people killed in the clashes.
Pierre Lamadokou, secretary general at Togo's FA, told BBC Sport: "If Caf wants us to play there, despite our request, then we will do it but it will be Caf's responsibility to make sure that the conditions
are good.
"But if Togolese authorities notice in the coming days that the situation worsens in Tunisia, then they will advice."
The 2017 African champion will be automatically qualified for the 2017 FIFA Confederation Cup in Russia.
